ABOUT

Hello!

Welcome to my website…blog…stream of consciousness…

I am an artist and designer whose practice explores the connections between sound, visual art, and interaction. My work spans music, visual art, design, and aesthetics, exploring different ways of viewing, interacting with, and experiencing musical ideas

Although my work may take different forms, they are all connected by an interest in how we communicate and interact with music. Visual pieces, animations, user-interactive designs, and writing have all become ways for me to explore this.

Currently, I am a PhD candidate at the University of Edinburgh. My research encompasses my creative practice and focuses on the visualisation of harmony through colour and geometric form.

Some of the main questions I ask are:

  • How can colour be used to represent harmonic relationships and tonal function?
  • How can geometric forms represent chord structures and intervallic relationships?
  • What patterns emerge when musical structures are translated into visual systems?
  • How does this visual translation affect the interpretation of musical information?
  • How do different visualisation structures influence meaning-making and user experience?

I am creating this blog to document my research and the ideas that develop alongside it. It will include previous compositional work, current ideas, reflections, works in progress, and the theoretical and critical writing that continues to shape my practice

My background…

I originally set out with the idea of becoming a performer. I trained as a classical saxophonist and moved to Edinburgh after high school to begin my Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Edinburgh. However, whilst there, I realised (somewhat quickly!) that performance was not for me. After this realisation struck me, I was not heartbroken, as I found I had developed an interest in composition, specifically graphic scores.

Having studied art and graphic design throughout school, I was drawn to the idea of communicating music through visual art. I began developing my own visual pieces, which can be seen in the Composition section of this website.

After graduating, I recieved scholarships to study at the Royal College of Art in London. There, I earned my MA in Information Experience Design, specialising in Sound Design. My master’s focused on exploring how we communicate ideas and information and had a dramatic impact in my approach, and how I saw and thought about musical experience.

Now I’m here. Back at the University of Edinburgh, bringing together my undergraduate and master’s training into one cohesive body of creative work and practice.

This website brings together everything I have done and everything I am currently doing. It is a place to document my throughts, ideas, and processes, as well as the work and research that have helped my practice develop.

So…welcome! Have a look around, enjoy (hopefully), and let me know what you think!
